Punjab: AAP MLA accused of hiding criminal case, Punjab and Haryana High Court issues notice

The petitioner submitted that while filing his nomination papers, Harmeet Singh did not record the details of the criminal case in which he has been declared a fugitive. In the event of doing so under the Representation of the People Act, he becomes ineligible to continue in his office.

Harmeet Singh, AAP MLA from Patiala’s Sanour, has been accused of hiding a criminal case. His election has been challenged by SAD leader and former MLA Harinder Pal Singh Chandumajra in the Punjab-Haryana High Court. On the petition, the High Court has issued a notice to Harmeet Singh and sought a reply. While filing the petition, HPS Chandumajra, through Advocate Dheeraj Jain, told the High Court that every candidate has to give complete information about himself while filling the nomination.

The election of the selected person can be canceled in the event of suppression of criminal case information in any way in the nomination paper. The petitioner submitted that while filing his nomination papers, Harmeet Singh did not record the details of the criminal case in which he has been declared a fugitive. In the event of doing so under the Representation of the People Act, he becomes ineligible to continue in his office.

An appeal was made to the High Court that the election of Harmeet to the Sanaur assembly seat should be canceled and a fresh election should be ordered. The High Court has issued a notice to AAP leader Harmeet Singh and ordered to file a reply on the petition.
