Terming the increase in MSP of Kharif crops as a ‘BJP jumla’, President of Mahila Kisan Union, Rajvinder Kaur Raju has alleged that the central government can raise its MSP of 14 Kharif crops on paper and make it clear among the general public, but the country Can’t fool the hardworking farmers.
Farmers organizations of Punjab have expressed their displeasure, terming the increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of 14 crops including paddy by the Central Government as inadequate. Farmer organizations say that the hike in MSP is much lower than the cost to farmers and the estimated inflation rate (6.7 per cent).
It is noteworthy that the Central Government on Wednesday increased the MSP of paddy by Rs 100 per quintal, increasing it from 1940 in 2021-22 to Rs 2040 per quintal for 2022-23. At the same time, the MSP on cotton in commercial crop has been increased by Rs 354 to Rs 6080. Farmers’ organizations allege that the cost of fuel, machinery, fertilizers, pesticides is increasing, against which the said increase in MSP is negligible.
Jagmohan Singh, general secretary of BKU Dakonda, has said that the MSP for paddy has been increased by 5.15 per cent, while the MSP for alternative crops of paddy has also been increased by 4.91 per cent (maize) and 6.18 per cent (cotton). For the other 11 crops also, the increase in MSP by 0.30 to 2.26 per cent will not benefit the farmers.
According to the press statement issued on Thursday by the State President of Loktantrik Kisan Sabha, Dr. Satnam Singh Ajnala and State General Secretary Kulwant Singh Sandhu, the farmers of Punjab will not get much benefit from the new MSP. The price of paddy, the main crop of Punjab, has been increased by only Rs 100. The MSP of maize crop has been increased by Rs 92. He demanded to fix the MSP as per the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.
Like every year, the government has not given any guarantee to buy these crops at MSP. He said that this is only a paper jumla of the BJP government and these announcements will be limited to paper only.
The increase in the MSP of paddy by Rs 100 and the marginal increase in the MSP of other kharif crops too is a blasphemous joke with the farmers. New SSP will not be accepted. Till date, the Center has not given the farmers the price of their crops according to the cost, but the farmers are being pushed into debt by paying a political price. Ramkaran Singh Rama, General Secretary Bhakiyu Lakhowal Tikait
The new SSP is very modest in comparison to the continuous increase in the prices of diesel, fertilizers and pesticides. The government should have also assessed the inflation rate before announcing the MSP. Sukhdev Singh Kokriklan, General Secretary Bhakiyu Ugrahan
