The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested Sanjay Popli, a senior IAS officer of the Punjab government from Chandigarh and Sanjeev Vats from Jalandhar, in another corruption-related case. A case has been registered against them under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Vigilance produced the accused in the Mohali court on Tuesday. Both the accused have been sent to four-day remand by the court.

According to the information, a contractor resident of Karnal had given a complaint against Popli on the Anti-Corruption Helpline. He alleged that the officials were demanding one per cent bribe for clearing the bills. He told that during the time of the Congress government, a sewerage project of seven crore rupees was started in Nawanshahr.
In this he was demanding one percent commission. The contractor paid Rs 3.5 lakh through Sanjeev Vats, a superintendent-level officer posted as the IAS officer’s secretary, on January 12. Vigilance claimed that Popli was demanding the balance Rs 3.5 lakh from the contractor. The complainant recorded the phone call and lodged a complaint on the Anti-Corruption Helpline. Popli previously headed the Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
Seven crore project, bribe of seven lakh rupees was sought
The sewerage project on Kariyam Road and Musapur Road in Nawanshahr is going on at a cost of Rs 7 crore and about 40 per cent of the project work has been completed. Till some time ago, IAS Sanjay Popli, who was posted as CEO in the Sewerage Board, had demanded a bribe of Rs 7 lakh from contractor Sanjay Kumar at the rate of one per cent.Contractor Sanjay Kumar told that out of this, three and a half lakh rupees had been given to Sanjay Popli in January 2022 but now for some time he was pressurizing him to pay the remaining three and a half lakh rupees. As soon as the news of the arrest of the IAS officer reached Nawanshahr, there was a stir in the council office, because the whole matter is related to the work going on in Nawanshahr.
