In order to supply drinking water to rural areas of water quality affected districts, the Punjab cabinet on Wednesday approved a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the operation and maintenance of multi-purpose canal water supply schemes. This will be the first of its kind ‘Punjab Gramin Jal (Suvidha) Company’ in India under the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation.

The virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also approved the opening of an account in the name of SPV, in which an amount of Rs 25 crore released by World Bank Fund (64 per cent) is deposited, and 36 percent of the state budget. It will support operations for the initial five years. This allocation will help the SPV to meet its contractual responsibilities and its administrative expenses and if there is a shortfall in revenue collection.

Cabinet authorized Chief Minister as chairperson
The cabinet has authorized the Chief Minister as the chairperson of the State Water Supply and Sanitation Mission to approve any future amendments, duties and responsibilities, funding pattern. It may be mentioned that the Water Supply and Sanitation Department is presently implementing five new multi-village canal water supply projects in 612 villages of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur districts and another project in 408 villages of fluoride affected blocks of Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib districts. doing work. This project is under construction.
Another project was started in 2019 in 39 villages of iron/arsenic affected Rupnagar district (Nurpur Bedi block). Further one project was completed by M/s L&T Limited in January 2021 on the basis of the Design, Build Operate, and Transfer (DBOT) model in the Moga district. Its total cost was Rs 218.56 crore and it made a good impact on the lives of 3.64 lakh people.

The cabinet also approved the creation of sub-tehsil Amargarh, which was a part of the Malerkotla sub-division, as a sub-division/tehsil. With this, the Malerkotla district will now include three sub-divisions Malerkotla, Ahmedgarh, and Amargarh. The district will also include 192 villages, 62 Patwar circles, and 6 Kanungo circles.

The cabinet has given the Chief Minister 12 departments – Police, Rural Development and Panchayat, Social Justice and Minorities, Agriculture and Farmers Development, Social Security and Women and Child Development, Health, Education (Primary and Secondary), Employment Generation, Industry and Commerce, Food. , Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, besides granting approval for the creation of new posts for the offices of Finance.
