• According to a senior government source, this expansion will affect 23 ministries. New faces will be included in these selected ministries. Some ministers will be discharged from these ministries and some ministers’ portfolios will be changed.

The first expansion of the Council of Ministers of the second term of the Modi government may happen this month. 23 Ministries have been selected for reshuffle and change in the Council of Ministers. Former Assam chief ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Mukul Roy may be called soon to discuss the extension. Discussions have been started with the allies involved in NDA.

Due to the death of several ministers and other reasons, a dozen ministers in the government hold more than one ministry. The burden of such ministers will be reduced through expansion. The extension was to be discussed with select leaders earlier this month itself.

Sonowal was called to Delhi. Whereas Scindia had returned only a week before traveling abroad for consultations. Meanwhile, the deliberations were delayed due to developments in Uttar Pradesh. Now it is being said that soon the process of consultation with these leaders will be started.

JDU may join the government
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has given his consent to join the Modi Council of Ministers. However, the kind of representation JDU will get in the cabinet is yet to be discussed.

Sources say that JDU will be given one post each of cabinet and minister of state. Apna Dal may get a place in the Council of Minister’s expansion. Apna Dal President Anupriya Patel also met the Home Minister on Thursday.

Too much workload on many ministers
At present, the workload on many ministers is too much. This happened due to the resignation of two ministers Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena, Harsimrat Kaur of Akali Dal, and the death of two ministers. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar holds charge of the Ministry of Heavy Industries along with Environment.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also holds charge of commerce, railways, and consumer affairs. Similarly, Narendra Singh Tomar, who is already handling agriculture, Panchayati Raj, and rural development, has an additional charge of food processing. While AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik was injured in a road accident, his ministry is being handled by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
