- Amidst the discord in Punjab Congress, the party high command has given a clear indication that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh will be the face of the party in the next assembly elections. At this time in Punjab, no other leader than the Captain can single-handedly take the Congress to the throne of power. What will be the reaction of the angry camp on this, it will be known only in the coming time.
Captain Amarinder Singh is the main face of the Congress in Punjab and the party cannot afford to ignore him at any stage. This came to the fore as a result of the recent turmoil in the state unit over the functioning of the Captain and the party high command’s efforts to resolve the dispute. The Congress will fight the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections under the leadership of the Captain and the Captain will also play an important role in ticket distribution.
The three-member committee of the high command, after hearing complaints from the angry Congress leaders of Punjab last week, may have given them a lollipop of assurance that all the leaders will get full respect in the party but has also made it clear about the Captain that the party’s leadership in Punjab Captain will lead.
Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Rawat has already made it clear that as per the convention of Congress, only the Captain will lead the party in Punjab. This announcement has put a question mark on the speculation of giving MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu the post of state unit chief because if Sidhu is made the state head, then he will definitely interfere in ticket distribution in the upcoming elections and the Captain will not like it.
In fact, in the Punjab Pradesh Congress, at this time no other leader than the Captain is strong enough to win the party on his own. If we look at the current situation, not only in the pro-Captain camp but also in the angry camp, there is no such face to be seen, on whose strength the high command can take the risk of contesting the 2022 elections.
Apart from the most vocal Navjot Sidhu and MP Pratap Bajwa in the angry camp, there is no such leader in MLA Pargat Singh, cabinet minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who can organize the state unit and take the party to power on his own.
Navjot Sidhu may have challenged the Captain to contest from Patiala and there is speculation about forming a separate party, but it is not easy to say how many leaders of the current Congress will come together under Sidhu’s leadership. On the other hand, if the high command ignores the captain under pressure from the angry camp, then there is no one to handle the party in the state. It is also worth mentioning that before the 2017 elections, the high command had given entry to Navjot Sidhu in the Congress against the will of the Captain, but after that, despite Sidhu’s lakhs of efforts during the last four and a half years, it was only the Captain’s who went ahead of the High Command.
