There are 1806 procurement centers notified by the Punjab Mandi Board. These will be allotted to different procurement agencies on September 25, 2021. Apart from this, rice mills and other appropriate public places will be notified as temporary procurement centers for procurement of paddy for Kharif procurement season 2021-22 to prevent the third wave of COVID-19 while avoiding overcrowding in mandis and different timing of paddy. But the purchase can be ensured.
The Punjab cabinet on Friday approved the Punjab Custom Milling Policy for the Kharif procurement season 2021-22. This will enable the paddy procured by the state procurement agencies (Pungrain, Markfed, PUNSUP, and PSWC) to be converted into custom milled rice and sent to the central pool.
A spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said that Kharif Procurement Season 2021-22 is starting from October 1, 2021, and this process will continue till December 15, 2021. The paddy procured during the procurement season 2021-22 will be stored in the rice mills of the state.
As per this policy, rice mills will be linked with procurement centers as per the procurement center allotment list issued by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs. As per the policy and agreement by the rice miller, rice will be provided out of the stored paddy till March 31, 2022.
It is noteworthy that every year before the start of Kharif procurement season, a custom milling policy is issued by the department, so that the paddy, which is procured by the state agencies as per the conditions fixed by the Government of India, can be milled.
Arrangement for procurement of 191 lakh tonnes of paddy
Keeping in mind the actual production of paddy during the last year, the cabinet also approved the arrangement for the purchase of 191 lakh tonnes of paddy. Accordingly, arrangements are being made to utilize the cash credit limit of Rs.42012.13 crore which is required for the purchase of 95 percent share allotted to the state procurement agencies.
