Newly appointed Advocate General of Punjab Aman Preet Singh Deol took charge on Monday. Now the opposition to his appointment has also started. The Bharatiya Janata Party has opposed his appointment.
Punjab’s newly appointed Advocate General Amar Preet Singh Deol (APS Deol) took over as the new AG of the state on Monday evening. His family members and close friends were present on this occasion. The Punjab government on Saturday recommended the appointment of Senior Advocate Deol to the post of Advocate General and sent his name to the Governor.
Meanwhile, a political ruckus has also arisen in the state over the appointment of Deol to the post of AG. Opposition parties have strongly opposed Deol’s appointment. In fact, Advocate Deol is advocating for several important cases against the Punjab government, including the case of former DGP Sumedh Saini and Paramraj Umranangal in the sacrilege case. Deol is also the lawyer of Sumedh Saini in the case of disproportionate assets and he has stayed the ongoing action against Saini till the 2022 elections by dismissing the objections of the Punjab government in the High Court.
It is noteworthy that soon after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister, Advocate General Atul Nanda also resigned from his post on 19 September. Since then, several names were considered by the government on the vacant post. It is also worth mentioning that in 2017, there was talk of appointing Amar Preet Deol as Advocate General but later this post was given to Atul Nanda, a close aide of Captain.
No hope of justice now: BJP
Punjab BJP State General Secretary Dr. Subhash Sharma expressed strong objection to the Congress government appointing Amarpreet Singh, the advocate general of the accused in the Kotkapura shooting incident, as the Advocate General of Punjab and said that now Punjabis should not expect justice from this government. Accusing the Congress of betraying Punjab, he said that the intention of the Congress, which came to power by promising justice for sacrilege and firing, is not clear in this matter. For the first four-and-a-half years, the Captain kept hanging on the matter and now the new Chief Minister has given a clear message by appointing Deol that it is only a political issue for the Congress.
