On Tuesday, charges were framed against eight accused in the Shaurya Chakra winner Balwinder Singh Sandhu murder case. During the hearing held in the special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIIA), charges were framed against Sukhdeep Singh, Gurjit Singh, Sukhmeet Pal, Inderjit Singh, Sukhraj Singh under Section 302, 120B, Arms Act and Unlawful Activities (UAPA Act). While Jagroop Singh, Akashdeep and Ravi Dhillon will be booked under Section 201, 212, and Arms Act. The next hearing of the case has been fixed for September 20.
In October 2020, Balwinder Singh Sandhu was shot dead at his school in Bhikhiwind. The investigation was handed over to the NIA after the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) was named in the murder. NIA has arrested 8 accused related to KLF, Sukhraj Singh Sukha alias Lakhanpal, resident of Gurdaspur, Sukhdeep Singh Bura alias Bhura, Ravinder Singh alias Ravi, resident of Hussainpur Ludhiana, Akashdeep Arora alias Dhaliwal, resident of Janakpuri Ludhiana, Jagroop Singh, resident of Subhash Nagar Ludhiana, Inderjit resident of Rashiana village of Tarn Taran. Chargesheet was filed against Singh alias Inder and Sukhmeet Pal Singh, resident of Bhikhiwind, the head of the gang.
Balwinder Singh did this in 1990, killed the terrorists
In September 1990, terrorist Panjwad along with 200 accomplices attacked Balwinder Singh’s house. Rocket launchers were also used in this. The terrorists had surrounded Balwinder’s house from all sides. All the roads leading to his house were also closed so that the police and paramilitary forces could not come to help.
In the five-hour-long encounter, Panjwad fled and several of his henchmen were killed. All the members of the family bravely fought the terrorists with weapons like stengan from home-built pucca bunkers. After this, the name of Balwinder Singh came in the headlines. Balwinder Singh, his elder brother Ranjit Singh and their wives were awarded the Shaurya Chakra by then President Shankar Dayal Sharma on the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1993.
